Miss Wittbrodt and our 4th graders at Alburtis Elementary school have worked so hard on their final science projects. The students worked in groups to create original songs featuring any concept in our Foss Energy Unit. The project focused on incorporating music and technology while allowing students to creatively express themselves and their science skills. They followed a “Introduction to Songwriting Guide” which broke down the steps to creating an original song. Google Classroom was used to send out my step-by-step slideshow including examples and my video tutorials for using GarageBand that focused on a given task during the process. Students had lessons on songwriting and lyric writing in class before beginning their original songs. They established the form of the song, completed a graphic organizer, wrote their lyrics, and then used GarageBand’s looping features and pre-recorded instruments as well as live recordings in their final projects. The students had lessons and learned how to properly assess their waves for appropriate amplitude, and became sound engineers in the editing process. After recording and editing, students practiced performing their songs in front of their peers incorporating choreography. In the end, the students were able to successfully use music and technology to share their newfound knowledge of waves, circuits, magnetism, and the transfer of energy.
